The short answer

Choose HP 213A for a smaller upfront purchase, compare HP 213X for regular office printing, and consider HP 213Y when your team goes through toner quickly. All three are options for the HP Color LaserJet Enterprise 5700dn. The main difference is rated page capacity, and the best value depends on the current cartridge price.

4×

the rated color yield of 213Y vs 213A
12,000 ÷ 3,000 per color

HP 213X doubles the color capacity of 213A, while 213Y doubles it again. Black capacity rises from 3,500 to 9,000 to 18,000 rated pages. For a busy workgroup, the larger cartridges can mean fewer stops to change supplies.

These ratios describe pages, not a fixed number of months. An office printing mostly short invoices will use toner differently from a team printing dense color presentations. Choose capacity around the work your printer actually does.

Which HP 213 Toner Has the Lowest Cost per Page?

Compare the same color and packaging condition at the current price. A higher purchase price can still buy a lower cost per page when the increase in capacity is large enough.

Cartridge price ÷ rated yield = estimated toner cost per page

For example, suppose black 213A, 213X and 213Y cartridges cost $100, $200 and $300. These are hypothetical prices, not current offers. Their estimated toner costs would be 2.86¢, 2.22¢ and 1.67¢ per rated black page. In this example, the largest cartridge costs more today but less for each page it is rated to print.

A quick buying rule: 213Y has twice the rated capacity of 213X in every color. If the same-color 213Y costs less than twice the 213X price, its rated toner cost per page is lower. For 213X versus 213A, the price threshold is about 2.571 times for black and exactly twice for each color.

Compare W2130A black, W2130X high-yield black and W2130Y extra high-yield black using your selected packaging option. This calculation excludes paper, maintenance, taxes and differences between rated and actual output.

Which HP 213 Cartridge Should You Choose?

For lighter printing: HP 213A

Standard yield is worth considering when you print occasionally, have a smaller purchasing budget, or rarely use a particular color. You do not have to buy the largest cartridge just because it fits.

For frequent printing: HP 213X

High yield is a useful middle option for an office printing throughout the week. Compare its current price per page with both standard and extra high yield before ordering.

Browse the HP 213X four-pack →

For busy workgroups: HP 213Y

Extra high yield is worth comparing when frequent replacements interrupt your team. With twice the rated capacity of 213X, it can stretch the time between cartridge changes.

Browse the HP 213Y four-pack →

You can choose capacity by color. If your office prints mostly black documents, compare 213Y black while keeping smaller 213A cyan, 213A yellow and 213A magenta cartridges for occasional color work. Replace only what is needed.

HP 213A, 213X and 213Y: Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between HP 213A, 213X and 213Y?

HP 213A is standard yield, HP 213X is high yield, and HP 213Y is extra high yield. Their black ratings are approximately 3,500, 9,000 and 18,000 pages respectively. Each cyan, yellow and magenta cartridge is rated for approximately 3,000, 6,000 or 12,000 pages, depending on the yield.

Does HP 213Y fit the HP Color LaserJet Enterprise 5700dn?

Yes. HP lists 213A, 213X and 213Y cartridges for the HP Color LaserJet Enterprise 5700 family. Choose the correct color and part number for your printer and region.

Can I mix HP 213A, 213X and 213Y in one printer?

Yes. In a printer that supports all three yields, you can choose a different capacity for each color. For example, use W2130Y extra high-yield black with standard-yield color cartridges. Each cartridge must go in its matching color slot.

Do HP 213A, 213X and 213Y use the same slot?

Yes. Supported yield versions of the same color use the corresponding cartridge position. A black 213A, 213X or 213Y goes in the black position; cyan, yellow and magenta each have their own position.

Is HP 213Y always the cheapest option per page?

No. It has the highest rated yield of these three options, but value depends on the actual price. Compared with 213X of the same color, 213Y offers twice the rated pages. It has a lower rated toner cost per page when it costs less than twice as much.

Do I need to replace all four toner cartridges together?

No. You can replace only the cartridge that needs replacing. Compare a four-pack when you need all four colors or want to keep a complete spare set available.

Does the HP 5700dn use ink or toner?

The HP Color LaserJet Enterprise 5700dn uses toner cartridges. It is a laser printer, so inkjet cartridges will not work in it.
