HP 414A vs 414X:
Which toner fits
your printing?
Compare page yields, printing costs, and toner options for your HP M454 or M479 printer.
The better buy depends on your price and printing volume.
Choose 414A for standard capacity and a smaller upfront purchase when pricing allows. Choose 414X for more pages between replacements. Print mostly in black? Compare a high-yield black + standard-color set.
Choosing between HP 414A and HP 414X toner comes down to how much you print and what you want to spend upfront.
HP 414A is the standard-yield option. HP 414X is the high-yield option, with a higher rated page count before replacement. Both are listed for the Americas version of the HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M479fdw. HP rates the black cartridges at approximately 2,400 pages for 414A and 7,500 pages for 414X. Color cartridges are rated at approximately 2,100 pages each for 414A and 6,000 pages each for 414X. HP’s M479fdw specifications confirm these replacement cartridges and yields.

HP 414A vs 414X: Cartridge Numbers and Page Yields
Use the chart below to match the color and cartridge number you need. Each product link takes you directly to the corresponding toner at Genuine Ink.
| Color | HP 414A standard yield | Approximate yield | HP 414X high yield | Approximate yield |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Black | W2020A: HP 414A Black | 2,400 pages | W2020X: HP 414X Black | 7,500 pages |
| Cyan | W2021A: HP 414A Cyan | 2,100 pages | W2021X: HP 414X Cyan | 6,000 pages |
| Yellow | W2022A: HP 414A Yellow | 2,100 pages | W2022X: HP 414X Yellow | 6,000 pages |
| Magenta | W2023A: HP 414A Magenta | 2,100 pages | W2023X: HP 414X Magenta | 6,000 pages |
These are approximate manufacturer-rated yields, not guaranteed output. HP explains that actual yield varies with printed content and other factors; its cartridge yield testing uses ISO/IEC 19798. See the HP 414X technical specifications.
Also, the color yields are per cartridge. Adding the cyan, magenta, and yellow ratings together does not tell you how many full-color pages a set will produce.
How Much Longer Does HP 414X Last?
Based on the published yields:
- Black: 7,500 ÷ 2,400 = approximately 3.13 times the rated pages.
- Each color: 6,000 ÷ 2,100 = approximately 2.86 times the rated pages.
That makes high-yield toner worth considering when cartridge changes regularly interrupt your work.
For example, if you print invoices, shipping documents, and reports throughout the week, a higher-capacity black cartridge may be useful even if your color printing is occasional. If you regularly produce color presentations or customer materials, compare the high-yield versions of all four colors.

Which Has the Better Cost per Page?
The cartridge with the lower purchase price does not necessarily have the lower toner cost per page.
Use this calculation:
Compare the same color and similar packaging conditions. For example, compare black 414A against black 414X, then repeat the calculation for any colors you need.
Here is an illustrative example using hypothetical prices. These are not current prices:
| Black cartridge | Example price | Rated yield | Estimated toner cost per page |
|---|---|---|---|
| HP 414A | $100 | 2,400 pages | 4.17¢ |
| HP 414X | $200 | 7,500 pages | 2.67¢ |
In that example, 414X costs twice as much upfront but has an estimated toner cost per page approximately 36% lower.
A useful buying rule follows from the yield comparison: 414X black has a lower rated toner cost per page whenever its price is less than 3.125 times the price of 414A black. For each color, the corresponding threshold is approximately 2.86 times.
These calculations cover toner only. They exclude paper, maintenance, and differences between rated and actual yield. Use the current price of your selected product option before deciding.
When Should You Choose HP 414A?
HP 414A is worth considering when you print infrequently or want to limit your immediate spending.
It can suit an occasional home-office printer, a lightly used office machine, or a color cartridge that you replace much less frequently than black. A lower upfront purchase can be more useful than buying extra capacity you will take a long time to use.
If you need every color, compare the Original HP 414A four-pack. If only one color needs replacement, use the individual cartridge links in the chart above.
When Should You Choose HP 414X?
HP 414X is worth considering when you print frequently, want more pages between replacements, or find that its current price offers a better cost per page.
Start with the color you use most. A business that produces mostly text documents may benefit most from upgrading black. An office that prints color materials regularly should compare all four high-yield cartridges.
The practical question is: Will the additional rated capacity justify the additional upfront cost for your printing needs?
Check the current options on the HP 414X toner set page before choosing.
Can You Use HP 414A and 414X Together?
For a compatible printer, you can choose a different yield for different colors. Genuine Ink offers an HP 414X black and HP 414A color combination pack containing:
- W2020X high-yield black.
- W2021A standard-yield cyan.
- W2022A standard-yield yellow.
- W2023A standard-yield magenta.
This combination is worth comparing if black runs out much faster than your color cartridges. It gives you extra black capacity while keeping the standard-yield color cartridges.
Compare the mixed pack’s current price with the standard and high-yield sets; the best purchase depends on both pricing and your usage.

Does Box Condition Affect Which Toner You Should Buy?
Cartridge capacity and packaging condition are separate buying decisions.
Genuine Ink offers packaging choices on selected products, including sealed and open-box options. The HP 414A set listing describes its open-box option as new, unused toner that has never been installed.
Read the selected option’s description before checkout. When comparing prices, make sure you understand the box condition and included warranty.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does the X mean in HP 414X?
In this cartridge family, X identifies the high-yield option. HP 414A is standard yield, while HP 414X has a higher rated page capacity.
Is W2020X the same as HP 414X black?
Yes. W2020X is the product number for HP 414X high-yield black toner. W2020A identifies the standard-yield HP 414A black cartridge.
Are HP 414A and HP 414X ink cartridges?
They are toner cartridges for compatible laser printers. When shopping for M479fdw supplies, look for the correct toner cartridge number.
Is HP 414X always the better value?
Not automatically. Compare the selected cartridge’s price against its rated yield, then consider how much you print and how much you want to spend now.
Should I buy a four-pack or one cartridge?
Buy an individual cartridge when you need a particular color. Consider a four-pack when you need all four colors or want replacements on hand. Compare the set price against the individual cartridges you actually need.
Can I mix HP 414A and HP 414X?
Yes. In a printer that supports this cartridge family, you can use high-yield black with standard-yield color cartridges. You can choose the yield separately for each color.
Do HP 414A and HP 414X fit the same slot?
Yes. The standard- and high-yield versions of the same color use that color’s cartridge position in a compatible printer. Black replaces black, cyan replaces cyan, and so on.
