How to read 78C10K0, 78C1XK0 and 78C1UK0

Start with black toner. Only one character changes between these three part numbers:

Standard

78C10K0

The zero after 78C1 marks the standard-capacity version shown here.

Extra High

78C1XK0

X identifies the Extra High capacity in this family.

Ultra High

78C1UK0

U identifies Ultra High capacity for the supported models below.

K means black; C means cyan; M means magenta; Y means yellow. For example, 78C1XK0 is Extra High black, while 78C1XC0 is Extra High cyan. The final character in these part numbers is the numeral 0, not the letter O.

This is a guide to these specific 78C1 numbers, not a universal rule for every Lexmark cartridge. Keep the complete code when ordering. Different regional or cartridge-program versions can have similar numbers.

Manufacturer-rated yields use ISO/IEC 19798. Actual output depends on your documents and printing conditions. The color figure is per cartridge; do not add all four yields to estimate full-color pages from a set. For black toner, X offers 4.25 times the standard rated capacity, while U offers 5.25 times. For each color, X offers approximately 3.57 times, while U offers 5 times. These ratios compare capacity, not printing speed or image quality.

Which set makes sense for your office?

You print occasionally

Start with Standard if its current purchase price and capacity suit a lighter workload. You do not need the biggest cartridge simply because it is available.

Your printer stays busy

Extra High offers a substantial capacity increase over Standard and works across all eight models in the chart. It is the larger option for the CS421dn, CX421adn and CX522ade.

View the Extra High set →

You want the longest interval

For a supported printer, Ultra High provides the largest rated capacity of these three choices. Compare current prices before deciding that it is the best value.

Compare the cost of a page, not just the box

Divide the current cartridge price by its rated page yield. Compare the same color and equivalent packaging condition.

Black toner

Standard: price ÷ 2,000
Extra High: price ÷ 8,500
Ultra High: price ÷ 10,500

Cyan, magenta or yellow

Standard: price ÷ 1,400
Extra High: price ÷ 5,000
Ultra High: price ÷ 7,000

For example, Ultra High black has a lower estimated cost per rated page than Extra High black if its price is less than about 1.24 times the Extra High price. For the same color, the threshold is 1.40 times. This comparison only applies when your printer supports both choices.

These figures cover toner only. Paper, other supplies and service are separate, and a full-color page can use several cartridges. Our standard vs. high-yield guide explains the calculation in more detail.

Why do some similar Lexmark numbers look different?

Capacity is only part of the product number. The 78C1 cartridges compared here are Lexmark Return Program supplies for the U.S./Canada region. Lexmark also lists other regional and regular-cartridge versions. Do not assume that a similar code is interchangeable.

Return Program cartridges are sold with single-use terms and must be returned only to Lexmark for remanufacturing or recycling. Regular cartridges without those terms are also available. “Return Program” describes the cartridge program; it does not mean the cartridge you are purchasing is a refill. See Lexmark’s cartridge and Return Program details.

If you see a code such as 78C0X10 or a number ending in G, check the exact listing, program and supported printer. Do not select it solely because its yield resembles one in this guide. Ask Genuine Ink to help match your printer and cartridge number.

Lexmark 78C toner questions, answered

Is 78C10K0 high yield?

No. 78C10K0 is Standard black, rated at 2,000 pages. 78C1XK0 is Extra High black at 8,500 pages, and 78C1UK0 is Ultra High black at 10,500 pages.

What is the difference between 78C1XK0 and 78C1UK0?

X is Extra High and U is Ultra High. U provides 2,000 more rated black pages, but it is supported by fewer printer models. Check the compatibility chart before upgrading.

Can I use Ultra High in a Lexmark CX522ade?

No. For CX522ade, compare Standard 78C10 and Extra High 78C1X. The Ultra High 78C1U supplies are for the supported models listed in the printer chart.

Does Extra High mean better print quality?

The yield label describes capacity, not a higher print-quality setting. Larger cartridges are intended to provide more pages between replacements.

Can I choose different capacities for different colors?

Choose each color from the capacities supported by your exact printer and region. You can buy an individual replacement without replacing the entire set. Ultra High is still restricted to its supported models.

Will a four-color set print the sum of all four yields?

No. Color pages can use multiple cartridges at once. Adding black, cyan, magenta and yellow yields does not give the full-color page yield of the set.

Why does the last character look like an O?

In the 78C1 part numbers shown in this guide, the last character is the numeral zero. Copy the entire part number from the cartridge or product listing to avoid confusion.
